Specialized studies ( Royal jelly protects against ultraviolet B-induced photoaging in human skin fibroblasts via enhancing collagen production ) indicate that royal jelly , one of the key ingredients of the “ROOTS DEFENCE 50 SPF” cream , can protect the skin from UVB-induced photoaging by increasing collagen production. Royal jelly contains proteins, carbohydrates, fats, free amino acids, vitamins and minerals. As the main unsaturated fatty acid, royal jelly contains 10 – hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA), which may have the ability to stimulate collagen production. In the study, Hye Min Park et al. measured the 10-HDA content of royal jelly by high – performance liquid chromatography and tested its effects on UVB-induced skin photoaging in normal human dermal fibroblasts. UVB-irradiated human dermal fibroblasts treated with royal jelly and 10-HDA increased the production of type I procollagen and TGF-1, but the level of MMP-1 was not changed. This demonstrated that royal jelly can protect the skin from UVB -induced photoaging by increasing collagen production.
